ISO Latin-1 Character Set

The following table contains the ISO Latin-1 character set (the character set used for HTML 4.0 and XHTML 1.0). The table provides each character, its decimal code, its named entity reference for HTML and also a brief description.

You can use it to insert character references in your html documents by looking up the character and using the number or entity name. Or you can use the table to replace named entity references with numerical ones for older browsers that do not understand all the HTML4 named entities.

The characters can also be created in Windows programs by holding down the ALT key and typing 0 (zero) followed by the decimal code for the character (omitting the "&#" reference).  e.g. ALT+0+198 will generate the character Æ.

Alternatively, you can simply highlight the character on this screen, copy it to the clipboard, and paste it into another document.

Notes:

The first 32 characters are control codes and are essentially unused, except for the space, tab, linefeed and carriage return characters.

Characters numbered 128 to 159 are also unused in HTML 4.0, although Microsoft Windows fonts using the Windows-1252 Western European encoding will display characters in these positions (e.g. the trademark sign and angle quotes). However, you should never use these numeric codes as character references in HTML.  Instead, you should use the equivalent character references contained in the Maths and Greek Letters table and the Markup and Internationalisation table.
