Symbol Fonts

The symbol characters in the following table can be created in Microsoft Windows programs by holding down the ALT key and typing 0 (zero) followed by the Ansi character code.  e.g. ALT+0+198 (Arial font) will generate the character Æ.

If these characters are then formatted with a 'symbol font' a host of additional characters can be displayed.

Alternatively, you can simply highlight the character you wish to use on this screen, copy it to the clipboard, and paste it into another document.

INSTRUCTIONS

To see the symbols displayed when different symbols fonts are applied, click the font's name in the menu on the left.  To return to the standard ansi character display, just click the refresh button on your browser or click 'Arial' in the font list.  You can also select different font sizes by clicking one of the 'size' options listed below the panel.

Notes:  Codes 1-32 are control characters that will not be displayed.  Also, characters numbered 128 to 159 are not displayed on all systems, although they will be displayed when using Microsoft Windows fonts with the Windows-1252 Western European encoding.  These numeric codes may be used to create symbol graphics in Windows programs, but should never be used as character references in HTML. Instead you should use the equivalent character references contained in the Maths and Greek Letters table and the Markup and Internationalisation table.
